What is a Differential?

The differential is the gear box housed in the rear of your rear-wheel-drive (RWD) vehicle between the two wheels. It is the part that synchronizes the wheels’ movements, particularly around a corner, so that they can travel different distances, and at different speeds, in order to make a smooth turn.

In a left turn, for example, the wheels closest to the turn would be the left, and they’re referred to as the inside wheels. The wheels opposite the turn are the outside. The inside wheels travel a shorter distance, and at a slower rate, that the outside to accomplish the turn. The outside wheels, however, are required to make a wide arc. To make up for the distance, they also need to travel at a faster rate. This is accomplished through the assistance of the differential.
