Automotive Service | What is brake fluid?

Modern vehicles require a wide range of different fluids to remain in working order—from motor oil and gasoline or diesel to transmission fluid and differential oil. In addition, you also need to ensure your brake fluid is in good condition, as without it you will suddenly find yourself unable to stop. Therefore, we’ll now take a quick look at brake fluid and exactly what it does to allow you to stop.

Brake fluid is a type of hydraulic fluid that serves two primary purposes. One purpose is to keep the various braking components lubricated to prevent damage. However, the more important purpose is transferring the power created when you press on the brake pedal to the vehicle’s brake pads. If the vehicle either doesn’t have enough brake fluid or the fluid is in poor condition, it could lead to a sudden loss of braking ability.

The issue is that brake fluid can turn into vapor under high temperatures, and when this happens, the vehicle will be unable to stop. Unfortunately, the boiling point of the brake fluid can lower over time as the fluid slowly absorbs water from the other components. This is why it is essential that you have your brake fluid checked and replaced regularly.
